His name is Tsutomu Yamaguchi. On August 6, 1945, Yamaguchi was working as an engineer in Hiroshima, Japan when the first atomic bomb was dropped. He was only three kilometers away from the explosion, and it caused severe burns to his upper body. Despite his injuries, Yamaguchi managed to get back home to his family in Nagasaki, where he continued to work despite the radiation sickness he was experiencing.
Just three days after the first bomb, on August 9, 1945, the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, where Yamaguchi was staying. Although he was less than two kilometers away from the epicenter, Yamaguchi survived once again, and so did his family.
Despite all the horror and tragedy of the bombings, Yamaguchi continued to work and raise his family in Japan until his death in 2010. His story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of perseverance.
